In reflective encoders, the LED and the photodetector are mounted on the same plane, so side-leakage light from the LED becomes noise for the photodetector and can degrade encoder performance.

A reflective encoder has a structure in which light emitted from the LED is reflected by a code wheel and the reflected light is detected by a photodetector. Compared with transmissive encoders, it can be made smaller and thinner, making it suitable for space-constrained applications. On the other hand, because the LED and the photodetector are placed close together, leakage light from the side of the LED becomes noise and may affect detection accuracy.

When used in reflective encoders where it is mounted adjacent to the photodetector, the stray-light-suppressing LED reduces noise caused by stray light from the side of the LED.

applications and improve operating reliability in high-temperature environments.
